Soomaa has its own charm in every season, but it's especially enchanting during the flood period, known as the fifth season.
When rainwater or snowmelt flows down from Sakala uplands, the rather shallow rivers of Soomaa cannot carry it away all at once and overflow their natural beds. Depending on the air temperature and weather conditions, an impressive floodplain or ice field forms in the heart of Soomaa National Park, creating excellent conditions for canoeing or kick sled trips.
The floods in Soomaa can occur at any time of the year and last from a few days to several weeks. There are various options how one can experience the fifth season, for example by taking a canoe trip across the flooded meadows or in the floodplain forests as suggested by Soomaa.com.
When looking for a place to stay in the fifth season, Soomaa Holiday Village certainly has front row seats to offer on the banks of Halliste River. Yet with heavy rainwater or snowmet, flooding can occur even on ponds, for example at Põnka Guesthouse.
